Coronavirus travel ban is LIFTED as thousands of school students are allowed to go back to class

  • There are 760 final year Australian students still in China due to the travel ban
  • The Australian government said they will be allowed to return on Saturday 
  • Students will be offered a ‘strict pathway’ to start their year 11 and year 12 studies
  • The trapped students have already missed three weeks of the first school term  

The coronavirus travel ban for senior high school students from China has been lifted as thousands of pupils return to class. 

There are 400 Year 12 students and 360 Year 11 students enrolled in Australian schools who are trapped in China due to travel restrictions. 

On Saturday, the Australian government announced the 760 students ‘have been offered a strict pathway to resume their studies in recognition of the importance of the final two years of school’. 

 ‘Year 11 and Year 12 students who are completing their senior secondary schooling can apply for an exemption to the 1 Feb 2020 COVID19 travel restrictions applied to foreign nationals who have been in mainland China,’ a government statement read. 

‘The decision was taken based on the best medical advice available and with the safety of Australians as the number one priority.’

The trapped students have already missed three weeks of school as the the first school term of the year began in late January and early February across the country.
