Cosmetic chain Lush has admitted to underpaying more than 5,000 employees for eight years. 

Thousands of staff at Australian cosmetics retailer Lush are owed as much as $2 million in back pay, the company announced on Tuesday.

Lush Australia director Peta Granger said audits were ongoing but it was known staff across the retail and manufacturing businesses were underpaid since 2010.

Ms Granger said the underpayment was the result of incorrect interpretations of the retail award. 

The Lush Australia Director admitted the company was at fault and apologised to her employees.

‘We should have had far more respect for our people’s pay and upgraded our payroll infrastructure to keep up with the growth of our business,’ she said on Tuesday.
