Devout Nutella fans will soon be facing an internal dilemma as to which chocolate hazelnut spread should reign supreme.
Costco recently released their own version of the Nutella product under the Costco brand name Kirkland and chocolate-lovers now have a new product to obsess over thanks to the grocery store warehouse.
But for those thinking that the spread is identical to the well known Italian-based product, the main difference lays in the price discrepancy.
The new spread: Costco just released its own version of the chocolate hazelnut spread
Cheaper price: Costco’s Kirkland version comes in a package of two 35.2-ounce jars for $7.99 in store
Costco’s hazelnut spread is being sold in a package of two 35.2-ounce jars for $7.99 in store and $9.99 online whereas the Nutella product is being sold in two 33.5-ounce jars for four dollars more on their website.
Kirkland Hazelnut Spread is also cheaper than Walmart and Amazon prices for Nutella with two 33.5-ounce jars being sold on Amazon for $21.08 and one 33.5-ounce jar for $5.98 on Walmart’s website.
Last week, word of the new product got out when Reddit user, Cliffzig, posted a photo of the Costco spread to his profile where people left comments and their thoughts on the two versions.
Reddit user, ricardoalonzo, commented: ‘Made my Nutella and marshmallow grilled “cheese” style sandwich with this instead of Nutella. My girlfriend didn’t even notice the difference. It taste the same!’
And another, StraightUpBruja, wrote: ‘I’ll probably end up buying some and then hating myself for eating too much of it. Eight bucks for two jars is cheap.’
Compare and contrast: Both products look the same but Nutella is two serving less than Kirkland Hazelnut Spread
Not until 2020: One person tweeted that they wouldn’t need to buy Nutella again for another two years
Own version: Another tweeted said that, in true Costco form, their spread would be sold by the gallon
Overload: Someone shared on social media that the Kirkland Hazelnut Spread was too much
While another user, Marthalameu, couldn’t contain their excitement over the new product and commented: ‘I couldn’t stop the drooling and didn’t look at the picture long enough.’
People also took to Twitter to share there thoughts on the product.
One tweet said: ‘Bought Kirkland hazelnut spread at Costco today. First time to see it, made with sunflower oil instead of palm oil. It’s a close Nutella dupe. And since it comes in a pack of two jars, I will not be buying Nutella until 2020.
Another person shared a similar tweet and said: ‘So Costco now has its own version of Nutella and I assume they’ll only sell it by the gallon.’
And someone else asked in a tweet what they were going to do with all the ‘Nutella’ their mom bought them from Costco.
And then there were those that though the Costco brand was better while some disagreed and thought the idea of Costco having their own hazelnut spread was unnecessary.
And Perez Hilton even voiced his opinion in social media that seemed in favor of Costco’s hazelnut spread.
He tweeted: ‘I’m so disappointed in my mom for not bringing this home.’
Better: A Twitter user also shared that they thought Costco’s ‘house brand’ was better than Nutella
No improvements: Another person wasn’t behind Costco’s spread and tweeted about the unnecessary product
Disappointed: Perez Hilton even voiced his opinion in social media that seemed in favor of the hazelnut spread
Recipe change: Nutella recently announced that it slightly changed he recipe of its chocolate and hazelnut spread
And while both products look delicious and somewhat identical to each other – other than the amount of hazelnut spread per jar – fans of Nutella will have to taste for themselves to see if there is a difference although it does appear that the Kirkland spread uses sunflower oil instead of palm oil.
They also both have 200 calories whereas the serving for the Kirkland hazelnut spread is 27 and Nutella is 25 – both at two tablespoons (37grams) – but that’s only if the entire jar isn’t eaten in one sitting.
And while Nutella enthusiasts may feel a little guilty about potentially jumping ship to a new hazelnut spread, they may have a reason to do so as the brand confirmed that it has changed the recipe of its chocolate and hazelnut spread.
The announcement sparked a huge backlash among fans of the brand. They announced that a jar of spread made by the Italian chocolate firm, Ferrero, now contains 8.7 per cent powdered skim milk, as opposed to 7.5 per cent previously, based on an analysis of the product label.
But the company assured that the quality and ‘all other characteristics’ would remain the same.
