County Down boy was killed in horror two-vehicle crash

A ‘smiley’ eight-year-old boy who dreamed of becoming a marine biologist was killed in a horror two-vehicle crash, as his community pay tribute to him.

Callum Morrow was pronounced dead at the scene after a silver Audi Q3 and a silver Ford Focus crashed in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland on Saturday.

Callum’s father Stevie O’Braonain is also understood to have been injured in the smash, as well as another child and a woman, who is in critical condition.

The incident happened on the Aughnacloy Road in Banbridge around 5.30pm on Saturday evening, July 21. In addition to Callum and his father, another child and a woman, who is in critical condition, were injured

Callum was a pupil at Carrick Primary School and a member of Lurgan Celtic FC, according to Belfast Live.  

The school’s spokeswoman said they were ‘devastated’ by the schoolboy’s death.  

She said: ‘Callum was a precious part of both his class and our whole school family in Carrick.

‘We remember him in particular for his great smile, a love of football and a determination to learn so that he could achieve his goal of being a marine biologist.

‘As a school community, we are praying continually for his family circle.’

And his football club also paid him a tribute, with a cub spokesman saying: ‘Everyone at Lurgan Celtic is deeply saddened and extend heartfelt condolences and thoughts to the Brennan and Morrow families at this tragic time.

‘Our prayers and thoughts are with you all, and at such times football pales into insignificance but the Lurgan Celtic family stand united in offering their support and condolences.’

The road the accident happened on was closed following the incident at around 5.30pm, but has since reopened.

Carla Lockhart, from the Democratic Unionist Party, described the incident as ‘horrendous news’ and urged parents to ‘hold your children tight tonight.’

In a Facebook post, she said: ‘Devastating news for a family tonight following the death of a little boy in a road traffic collision on the outskirts of Banbridge.

‘Just horrendous news my thoughts and prayers are with the family.

‘Hold your children tight tonight and please please pray for this family as they experience this unbearable grief.’

Inspector Gregory Beckett said: ‘The boy tragically died at the scene of the two vehicle collision which occurred at around 5.20pm on Saturday evening, involving a silver Audi Q3 and a silver Ford Focus. 

‘Three other people have been taken to hospital and are being treated for injuries which are described as serious.

‘The road was closed for some time following the collision but has since re-opened.

‘Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage to contact local officers in Lurgan or the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference 994 21/07/18.’
