A couple who accidentally threw away £15,000 in cash have had their money returned thanks to honest recycling centre staff.

The duo from Burnham-On-Sea had taken several boxes of rubbish from the house they were clearing, belonging to a deceased relative, to a recycling depot in Midsomer Norton, Somerset.

Unknown to them a substantial sum of money was tucked inside.

Eagle-eyed staff were looking for an electrical cable when they spotted the cash inside one of the boxes.

The honest workers then contacted Avon and Somerset Police who found the couple with the help of CCTV footage from the recycling centre.

Officers identified the car that had dropped them off and were then able to find the couple’s address.

At Radstock Police station they told police that they had been clearing a relative’s house in Bath and dropped off boxes at the recycling centre.

The couple added that the relative had been known to hide money in strange places around the house.

Avon and Somerset Police said on Facebook : ‘We would like to say a big thank you to the staff at the recycling centre.

‘Without their diligent attitude, integrity and assistance, the family would never have known about the money found, and we would not have been able to return it to them, especially in time for Christmas.
