Jeremy Allen, 29, has been charged with cause wounding or grievous bodily harm with intent to murder, reckless grievous bodily harm, and reckless wounding.

Cassandra Ross, 23, has been charged with concealing a serious indictable offence.

Allen was refused bail with the magistrate noting the fact he fled the scene, altered his appearance, and tried to hide the weapon in an attempt to evade police.

His lawyer has suggested his client acted in self defence.

Ross is expected to apply for bail this week.

Emergency services were called to a Woolworths carpark in Balmain, an affluent suburb in Sydney’s inner-west, about 6.50pm on Thursday.

The 16-year-old boy was grocery shopping with his 14-year-old younger brother when he was set upon by strangers and stabbed in the stomach and hand.

Witnesses described hearing chilling screams from the carpark, before seeing the boy covered in blood.

Police allege Mr Allen confronted the boy and his brother outside Woolworths, asked for a cigarette lighter, and then stabbed him.

The boys’ mother has praised the actions of the younger brother.

‘My other son did an amazing job, he’s a very switched on kid and he held it together through that period. In calling the ambulance first he probably saved his life,’ she said.

‘I just saw some kids screaming and at first I thought they were just mucking around,’ one witness told Nine News.

‘Then I heard him call out ‘I’ve been stabbed! I’ve been stabbed! Help me!’ and I walked over and there was just blood all over the floor.’

The witness recalled the young victim’s confusion and shock following the brutal attack.

‘He said ‘I don’t know where he came from or who he was – he just came out of nowhere’,’ they said.

The teenager was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred hospital after being treated by paramedics at the scene and underwent a major operation.

Inspector Gary Coffey said they were investigating the stabbing as a random attack, and did not believe the perpetrator and victim were known to each other.

The police said the boy was so badly injured he was not able to be interviewed on Thursday night.

‘It’s a pretty ferocious attack and it’s not normally something that would occur in this area, so we are very keen to speak to the victim once his condition improves,’ he said.

He remains at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he is being treated for head and hand stab wounds.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
