A man has been shot dead outside a shopping centre in Melbourne’s north in what police believe is a targeted attack.

Emergency workers arrived at the shopping centre on Windrock Ave in Craigieburn just before 3pm on Saturday after reports of several shots fired.

They found two injured men, with one dying at the scene. The other man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police have cordoned off the area and are working to determine the motive behind the incident, and say the shooting appears to be targeted.

One distressed-looking man man had to be held back by police from trying to reach the scene as horrified bystanders looked on, while an older broke down in tears.

Footage from the scene shows a white vehicle believed to be a Mercedes SUV peppered with gunshots.

The passenger window is riddled with nine gunshots with another three apparent dents in the front windscreen.
