Dozens of horror fans descended on the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Austin, Texas, on Saturday in their best clown costumes to catch a first screening of one of this year’s most hotly-anticipated films.
Guests were treated to games, a raffle, and got to take pictures in a photo-booth before being allowed to see the film. Anyone who was deemed to be ‘insufficiently clownish’ was also offered face paint touch-ups.
It has proved a smash hit in an otherwise awful summer for the film industry, garnering $117.2million in its opening weekend, which is the most for any horror film in history.
Based on the novel by Stephen King, it follows seven children of the ‘losers club’ who battle a demonic force which takes the form of their biggest fears – most famously as Pennywise the clown.
