Cristiano Ronaldo became the top scorer in world football for 2023 after scoring his 40th goal of the year in Portugal’s 5-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday evening.

The Portuguese superstar netted twice at the Bilino Polje stadium as Roberto Martinez’s side breezed through their European Championship qualifier.

Portugal had already qualified for next year’s tournament in Germany after beating Slovakia at the weekend but showed no signs of letting up against their Balkans hosts.

38-year-old Ronaldo scored the first of his brace from the penalty spot after a handball was awarded and the record goalscorer made no mistake from 12-yards.

He added his second of the evening in the 20th minute after being played through by Barcelona forward Joao Felix and dinking his chip over the oncoming goalkeeper.
