Critics blast ‘democratic socialist’ Tiffany Cabán for plans to decriminalize sex work

‘Queens is going to be the borough for sex tourism in New York City!’ Critics – including Seth Meyer’s wife – blast ‘democratic socialist’ Tiffany Cabán for vowing NOT to prosecute pimps and prostitutes if she becomes the new District Attorney

  • Tiffany Cabán is one of seven candidates competing in Tuesday’s Democratic primary to be the next District Attorney of Queens
  •  The 31-year-old public defender has made the decriminalization of sex work a central component of her campaign
  • Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have all endorsed Cabán in the race
  • However, some prominent women’s groups and activist are now slamming Cabán’s plans not to prosecute pimps and prostitutes

Critics fear one far-left candidate could turn Queens into New York’s sex work capital should she become the borough’s new District Attorney.

Tiffany Cabán, a self-described ‘democratic socialist’, says she won’t prosecute pimps, customers and prostitutes should she win Tuesday night’s Democratic primary and eventually be elected to office in November.

The 31-year-old has made decriminalization of sex work a core issue of her campaign, recently telling The New York Post that prosecuting customers could be harmful to prostitutes who are in dire economic circumstances.

‘When you criminalize customers, what you actually do is, you’re cutting off economic access for folks who don’t have any other way to support themselves,’ she told the paper.

Cabán, who is a queer Latina, has already received endorsements from Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and The New York Times.

However, several of her Democratic opponents, as well as women’s groups, say  plans to decriminalize sex work could be dangerous.

Laura Ramírez, a program coordinator for the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women, told the New York Post that the sex work market will ‘swell’ should decriminalization go through.

‘Queens is going to be the borough for sex tourism in the city,’ she claimed.

‘That’s the only thing that can happen. It’s just open season.’

Meanwhile, former prosecutor and women’s rights activist Alexi Ashe-Meyers is also a skeptic of Cabán’s proposals.

The lawyer, who is married to talk show host Seth Meyers, stated: ‘If you decriminalize the sex trade, you are increasing the demand for that and you have to fill that demand with supply. Who fills that supply?’

She further claimed: ‘What Cabán supports is decriminalizing the entire sex trade. By doing this, she is betraying survivors of trafficking.’

While Cabán’s campaign is gaining momentum, she still faces tough competition during Tuesday’s primary, particularly against the more establishment front-runner Melinda Katz.

However, some pollsters are predicting that Cabán could score a shock win, not unlike Ocasio-Cortez did during her primary victory over Joseph Crowley in 2018.

Should she win, Cabán will then face off against Republican Dan Kolgan in the general election in November.
