Crown Princess Mary of Denmark looks regal in red for a concert with Prince Frederik

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark offered a rare glimpse into palace etiquette on Tuesday as she pressed herself against a wall as Queen Margrethe entered a royal box.

The Danish royal was at a gala concert at Fredensborg Palace alongside her husband Prince Frederik when Mary was seen showing respect to her mother-in-law.

Mary, 47, looked regal in a ruby red ensemble for the evening event, which celebrated the work of community groups in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands and the special relationship between the three territories.

As Queen Margrethe, 79, arrived in the royal concert box, Australian-born Mary was seen pressing herself upright against the wall in an apparent show of respect for the Danish monarch.

The family outing comes weeks after Mary was named a regent, meaning she can perform duties as head of state when Margrethe is otherwise engaged.

The mother-of-four – who shares Prince Christian, 14, Princess Isabella, 12 and eight-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine with husband Frederik –  donned a high-neck blouse and midi-skirt embellished with translucent beading.

Mary, who was born in Hobart, Tasmania, teamed the look with a matching red envelope clutch bag and a vertiginous pair of metallic stilettos.

She accessorised with diamond and ruby drop earrings and wore her brunette tresses in an elegant chignon, allowing loose curls to frame her glamorously made-up face.

Prince Frederik, 51, looked dapper in a navy blue tuxedo, black bow tie and patent dress shoes.

Exuding distinguished elegance, Queen Margrethe wore an ankle-length forest green gown with daintily ruffled sleeves.

The concert programme included a selection of traditional music from Danish, Greenlandic and Faro culture, with the verses of one hymn – ‘Now, thank all God’ – sung alternately in all three languages, the Danish royal family’s Instagram said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Crown Princess attended the annual Christmas Seal presentation at Copenhagen Town Hall.

Mary, who is a patron of the Danish Christmas Seal Foundation which provides funding for five care homes for vulnerable children, made a stylish appearance in a navy leather skirt and geometric floral blouse with billowing balloon sleeves.

Last week, the Princess proved her savvy style credentials by recycling a floral gown for a lavish gala at the American Chamber of Commerce in Copenhagen, two years after she first wore it.

Mary stunned in a $2,328 floral Erdem dress, which she previously wore to the joint 80th birthday celebrations of King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway in 2017.

Earlier this month, Mary was named Danish regent in a historic move by Queen Margrethe – placing her one step closer to becoming the first ever Australian-born queen.

Mary’s new role means she can perform duties as head of state when Margrethe is otherwise engaged.

The Danish Queen is gradually handing over the reins to other members of the royal family, with Frederik, his brother Prince Joachim, and the Queen’s sister Princess Benedikte also named as official stand-ins for the monarch.

Mary will become Queen of Denmark when Frederik ascends to the throne, following the death or abdication of his mother.
