Crystal Palace will re-appoint former player Shaun Derry to Roy Hodgson’s backroom team… just five months after he fell out of favour with sacked head coach Patrick Vieira

Crystal Palace will re-appoint former player Shaun Derry on to head coach Roy Hodgson’s backroom team just five months after he was sidelined by axed boss Patrick Vieira.

Derry is rejoining the Eagles ahead of next season to work alongside Hodgson and his coaching staff.

The former midfielder was relieved of his first team duties earlier this year after Vieira, manager at the time, decided he didn’t like Derry’s approach to man-management with players.

But Palace failed to win a single match following Vieira’s decision to marginalise Derry, who is a hugely popular and respected figure at the club.

Indeed, the decision was viewed as a mistake by certain team members, particularly during a period when the team were struggling.

The interim coach was confirmed on a permanent basis on Monday

But Derry is returning to Palace as a first team coach and will join Ray Lewington, Paddy McCarthy and Dean Kiely as part of Hodgson’s team.

The south London side announced the long-term appointment of Hodgson on Monday, after the 75-year-old successfully steered the Eagles to safety after he was appointed on an interim basis at the end of last season.

‘I have spoken with the chairman at length and we agreed that we must be ambitious in getting the most out of such talent,’ said Hodgson in the wake of his confirmation of his role on a permanent basis.

‘As such, we have set ourselves the target of a top-half finish, which we believe is eminently achievable with such a fabulous group of players and the most magnificent supporters who get behind the team, week in, week out.’
