Australians are crying ‘highway robbery’ after a popular pub was caught charging an ‘unreasonable’ price for two slices of fairy bread.
Buddy’s Bar in Sydney’s inner west has come under fire for the outrageous $7 menu item.
The bar’s management has defended the snack, and it’s price, claiming it has been a hit with customers.
One man was delighted to see the beloved treat on the menu, and ordered the dish without glancing at the price.
The bar snack consisted of two slices of white bread with butter, 100s and 1000s – and controversially added pop rocks and a side of strawberry syrup dipping sauce.
The anonymous customer admitted to enjoying the dish despite how much it pulled on his purse strings.

He shared a photo of the treat on a popular Reddit forum.
‘Fairy bread with pop rocks and a side of strawberry syrup dipping sauce at Buddy’s Bar in Newtown,’ he captioned the image.
When asked if he thought the dish was worth the steep $7 price, he found himself agreeing.
‘To be honest, yeah, I loved it,’ he said. ‘It was a yummy sweet treat. The popping candy was a new take on it.’
But many were taken aback by the shocking price and non-traditional cut of the bread.
‘It’s not even a triangle?’ a woman pointed out. ‘Sacrilege! Straight to jail.’
‘A bit stingy with their portion sizes for $7!’ another said.
‘Two slices of white bread for $7,’ another repeated out of shock. ‘It’s idiots like this who keep prices high for everything for the rest of us.’
‘I just can’t process this,’ another said. ‘It’s highway robbery.’
A spokesperson from Buddy’s Bar said: ‘The Fairy Bread was added to the menu for a bit of fun and has been a big hit with guests enjoying the nostalgia of their favourite Aussie treat as a kid.’
‘The margins we make on the fairy bread are lower than the industry average, it’s there for a bit of fun and we’re stoked that people are enjoying it.
‘Like all items on our menu, there’s plenty of hidden costs that goes into them. The sales from our food and beverages allows us to continue supporting jobs for our amazing staff, local artists, musicians, DJs and comedians each week.’
Others had a different approach to the situation.
‘It is artisanal and ethically produced,’ a man wrote. ‘Don’t call them ‘hundreds and thousands’ – they’re all individuals.’
A second said: ‘If people were not willing to [spend] $7 on it, they wouldn’t be selling it.’
‘Over priced menu items are also handy to comply with certain liquor licenses,’ another explained. ‘A way for bars to seem like they do have food.’
