A man has been shot dead near a popular tourist attraction in the Northern Territory. 

The man was reportedly spotted wandering semi-naked before he was shot on a rural property at the Cutta Cutta Caves, 30 kilometres south of Katherine. 

A woman at the property was checking on her baby while the man was in the area, with her husband allegedly shooting the man, NT News reports. 

One man, whose age has not been disclosed, remains in custody.

NT Police warned the public there would be an increased police presence in the area but said there was no further risk to the community. 

The entrance gate to the Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park was locked on Thursday morning to block access to both the public and media.

A Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman said the national park was already closed when the incident occurred, with tours of the cave to resume in April.
