Cycling: Christmas jumper projects ‘safe zone’ on the road to remind drivers to keep their distance

Ford creates a Christmas jumper for cyclists that projects a 5-foot ‘safe zone’ in the shape of a fir tree onto the road to remind drivers to keep their distance when overtaking

  • The car maker unveiled the design as part of their ‘Share The Road’ campaign
  • Rudolph the Reindeer -themed ornaments hide the lights the project the image
  • The design might be adapted to remind people to keep their social distance
  • But Ford have said that the jumper is a concept, and they have no plans to sell it

A Christmas jumper for cyclists that projects onto the surrounding road a 5-foot-long ‘safe zone’ — one shaped like a fir tree — has been developed by Ford.

The design is patterned after Rudolph the Reindeer — and its lights are concealed within the giant red nose, antlers and tail that stick out of the front and back.

The projection would serve as a festive reminder for drivers to keep their distance when overtaking cyclists — and could also be used by e-scooter riders too.

The car maker noted that the concept might even be applied to the present pandemic, marking out one’s social distance to ward off ‘space invaders’.

Unfortunately, the design is only a concept at the moment, and Ford have no current plans to bring the jumper to the consumer market.

‘As people start pulling out gaudy Christmas jumpers from the backs of their wardrobes ready for the festive season,’ a spokesperson for Ford began.

‘We’ve created one that you’ll actually want to be seen in.’

‘In fact, that’s the whole point!’ they added.

‘It may look like any other over-the-top festive attire, but the “Safe Distance” Christmas Jumper has a special gift for cyclists and e-scooter riders,’ Ford said.

This, the car manufacturers explained, lets ‘other road users know to give them enough space when overtaking.’

‘Developed as a concept, the jumper is part of our on-going “Share The Road” campaign,’ Ford continued.

The risk presented by close-passing vehicles, they explained, is a key issue experienced by cyclists and e-scooter riders alike.

At this time of year, they added, ‘cyclists and e-scooter users are particularly vulnerable too, due to longer periods of darkness.’
