The collision took place outside the Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

In a Facebook post, the sports centre announced their closure: ‘ATTENTION: Due to a road traffic accident out the front of the facility, we’re temporally closed to the public till further notice.’

Last Monday a 13-year-old was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was struck by a driver in Coburg, just 6km from Northcote.

Police are desperately searching for the damaged European-style car, believed to be a BMW, that ran into her as she was riding her bike.

Residents in Melbourne’s inner west have long been trying to remove trucks from residential roads citing safety concerns.

In August police conducted a road blitz in North Melbourne and found that more than one-third of trucks pulled over on key inner-west routes were unroadworthy.

A 15-year-old teenager from Melbourne, who now lives with a permanently disfigured leg, has called for stricter driver training and a crackdown on truck safety after he was hit by a semi-trailer and pulled underneath it, reported The Age.

Victorian Transport Association’s chief executive Peter Anderson has also called for tighter training and licensing requirements for heavy vehicle drivers in Victoria.
