Cyclist fighting for life after crash with cement truck at Old Street

A female cyclist is fighting for her life following a collision with a cement truck at a busy roundabout in east London.

Emergency services rushed to the Old Street roundabout, in Islington, following reports of the crash between a lorry and a cyclist, believed to be in her 30s.

The popular commuter area, next to Old Street Tube Station, was sealed off following the crash, which took place at around 3.30pm today.

Dramatic images posted on social media showed a mangled bike lying in the road next to a cement truck. 

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene of the crash where the area was cordoned off.

A spokesperson said: ‘The female cyclist, aged in her 30s, has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

‘Enquiries are underway to inform her next-of-kin.’ 

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 3:30pm today to the junction of Old Street and City Road, EC1V to reports of a road traffic collision involving a cyclist. 

‘We sent an incident response officer, two single responders in cars and an ambulance crew to the scene. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance by road. 

‘We treated a woman at the scene and took her as a priority to a major trauma centre by road.’ 

The incident comes just a month after a cyclist was hit and killed by a Toyota Prius less than a mile from Old Street station.

Police were called to the junction with Percival Street at 12.20am on Friday July 6 after the collision between cyclist Soren Aarlev and a car.

Meanwhile, on Old Street in February 2016, former McDonald’s worker, courier and scaffolder Charlie Alliston (right) smashed into mother-of-two Kim Briggs left) with his illegal ‘fixie’ bike as she crossed Old Street

The 38-year-old, who lived in Haggerston but was originally from Denmar was taken to hospital where he died five days later.

Meanwhile, on Old Street in February 2016, former McDonald’s worker, courier and scaffolder Charlie Alliston smashed into mother-of-two Kim Briggs with his illegal ‘fixie’ bike as she crossed Old Street.

Mrs Briggs, a 44-year-old HR consultant, suffered ‘catastrophic’ injuries when Alliston smashed into her and she died in hospital a week later.
