A cyclist is lucky to be alive after he was flung into the air from his bike and impaled on the support post of a road sign.

Neil McLagen, a 37-year-old Perth resident, was riding near his home in the outer southern suburb of Seville Grove when he became distracted by a broken GPS on his bike.

Mr McLagen recalled that he heard someone say, ‘Look out buddy!’ and before he had a chance to look up he ran into the back of a roadworks trailer, reported Yahoo7 News.

The father of two was thrown through the air and landed on the support post of a road works sign which pierced his groin.

‘It opened up my groin and I lost a heck of a lot of blood. At the time I thought I wasn’t going to make it,’ Mr McLagen said.

‘Nothing else in that moment was important other than my family and trying to survive.’

The man who had warned him was a road worker who rushed to help as Mr McLagen pulled himself off the post.

The experienced cyclist was rushed to hospital for surgery where doctors worked to replace two litres of blood and discovered the post had missed his femoral artery by a millimetre.

‘It narrowly missed everything major, if it was going to hit anywhere, it needed to be there,’ he said.

Mr McLagen is now recovering with the support of his wife Cara, teenage daughter Leah, and three-year-old son Caelan.

He issued a reminder to all those on the road in any type of vehicle, that a moment of distraction can result in disaster and keeping your full attention on what is in front of you can save your life.
