A young man who was struggling with a flat tyre has watched on in horror as his dad, helping him change it, was hit and killed by a passing driver.

The 55-year-old dad was helping his son change the tyre on the Princes Highway in eastern Victoria, between the towns of Flynn and Rosedale, on Friday morning just before 8.30am.

As the pair attempted to change the tyre, another driver was passing by when he hit the dad, killing him instantly.

Victoria Police Senior Sergeant Luke Banwell told the ABC the tragedy would rock the local community.

‘Whilst they’ve been attending to this puncture the father has been hit by another car passing beside and unfortunately he’s died,’ he said.

‘This will have ripple effects through the community, it’s the most tragic thing that can happen to a community, particularly when all the people are from that community.’

The driver of the car stopped immediately to provide assistance.

‘The driver of the vehicle is assisting us with our inquiries at the moment and is being treated for shock in hospital,’ Senior Sergeant Banwell said.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.

Westbound traffic along the highway, headed towards Traralgon, was diverted with lanes closed for both directions of traffic.

Emergency services were directing traffic while police and ambulance crews attended the scene.

Witnesses or those with dashcam footage of the accident have been urged to contact the police.
