Australian entertainer Dan Sultan will face court next month in relation to indecent assault allegations from almost 12 years ago.

The ARIA-award winning indie rocker and children’s entertainer was charged late last year in relation to an incident that allegedly occurred in Coburg in Melbourne’s north in 2008.

Victoria Police confirmed the singer, 36, had been charged with the alleged offence and ordered to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on March 16.

‘Fawkner Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation team detectives have charged a 36-year-old man following a sexual assault that occurred in Coburg in September 2008,’ a spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia.

‘A man from Connells Point, NSW has been charged with one count of indecent assault.’

Sultan declined to comment on the allegations when contacted by The Sunday Telegraph at his Connells Point home in Sydney’s south.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Sultan’s management for further comment.

Sultan has become one of Australia’s most-loved entertainers since bursting onto the music scene in 2006 with his debut album Homemade Biscuits.

He made the move to Sydney from Melbourne a year ago.

The indigenous performer, who is 20 months sober, is open about his previous battle with alcoholism, which he described as an allergy in an in-depth interview with the Adelaide Advertiser in January.

He said becoming sober saved his life.

‘It sounds simple, but not drinking really helps,’ he told the publication.

‘I’ve done a lot of good work. I haven’t always been perfect… but I’m a good person who likes to help people. I just moved that attention to myself.’

‘I never really felt like I had to do it (drink). It (alcoholism) just sneaks up on you, man.’

Sultan credits his long time partner Bronnie Jane Lee for his recovery, along with the birth of his daughter, who was born in June 2019 on the one year anniversary of being sober.

He spent time in rehab following a disastrous concert in Cairns in June 2018, where he fell over on stage ‘drunk’, sang out of tune and forgot the lyrics while performing Britney Spears’ hit Baby One More Time.

He issued a public apology to fans afterwards, which occurred in the final stages of a national tour.

‘I want to apologise to all of my fans, particularly those who were at the Cairns show. My behaviour was inexcusable and disrespectful,’ he posted.

‘I’d also like to extend an apology to the staff at Tanks Arts Centre for what occurred. I am taking stock of my personal situation and am seeking professional help.’

He later described the incident as a wake-up call to stop drinking.

‘I went to a place for a month, every day for rehab. I stayed at home and got up every morning and went there and came home at night, which was really good,’ he told the Sydney Morning Herald five months later.

‘I felt okay but what had started to happen was that I’d started to black out leading up to that and you don’t feel yourself blacking out, you don’t know where you’re at … when you’re drinking like that.’

Sultan’s next scheduled gig is the Port Fairy Folk Festival in Victoria on March 6.
