Dan Walker reveals he doesn’t remember his near-fatal bike accident as he gears up for 200-mile charity cycle: ‘I was out cold for a bit’

Dan Walker has revealed he doesn’t remember his near-fatal bike accident last year.

The presenter, 46, was hit by a car while cycling in Sheffield near his family home in February 2023.

The accident left him battered and bruised with a bloodied face but luckily he was fortunate enough to avoid any serious injuries.

Over a year after the incident, Dan is taking part in a 200-mile charity cycle across the North of England in support of Global’s Make Some Noise charity.

Speaking to the PA News Agency, Dan insisted he hasn’t dwelled on the accident, saying: ‘To be honest with you, I’ve not even thought about it.’

‘I haven’t watched the accident back. I know there’s footage of it but I don’t think I need to. I can’t remember what happened, because I was out cold for a bit, but I never didn’t think about getting back on a bike.’

He added: ‘I think I got back on and started cycling again maybe three weeks afterwards.’

Asked if he has any safety concerns about the cycle, Dan said: ‘Obviously, it goes through your mind every now and again. But I try and take as much care as I can.’

During the accident, Dan also went through something closely resembling an ‘out-of-body experience’, and said that while he ‘doesn’t know’ if it was spiritual, part of him  ‘genuinely thought that was it’.

Dan, who is a devout Christian, told The Times: ‘In my mind I was cycling down a French boulevard, a tree-lined boulevard, which I think I’d been to before but not on a bike.

‘Then all of a sudden I was watching myself on the floor, watching a screen, and then on that screen I saw these two heads appear. And then I jumped back into myself and I was on the floor and those two faces were the ambulance workers.’

In the end, he did not ask police to pursue charges, even though at the time he felt ‘that was it’.

However, he’s continued to feel the impact of the accident on a day-to-day basis and struggles to get out of his car due to nerve damage.

While he didn’t break any bones, the car only stopped 50cm from his head and he narrowly avoided long-lasting injuries.

Dan is the new host of Classic FM’s revamped breakfast show after joining the team in January.

The early starts mean he spends much of the week away from his wife Sarah and three children: Susannah, 16, Jessica, 14, and Joe, 13.

The former TV football presenter formerly co-hosted BBC Breakfast for six years before moving to Channel 5 and appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2021, where he was paired with Nadiya Bychkova.
