While popping a pimple on your face may seem extremely tempting, Dance Moms star Brooke Hyland ran into some trouble recently when she squeezed one in an area that’s called the ‘triangle of death.’
Hyland, 25, who often shares her daily life on social media as a content creator, went viral after she posted a video a few weeks ago explaining that she woke up with an extremely swollen eye after squeezing a pimple near her eyebrow.
In the comments section, many warned that the area was close to the ‘triangle of death,’ which is the section of the face from the bridge of your nose to the corners of your mouth.
It is such a dangerous area to have a pimple in because it can lead to a facial infection that could potentially spread to the brain, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
In the initial video, Brooke Hyland, 25, said that she woke up with an extremely swollen eye after she squeezed a pimple that was near her eyebrow
Hyland used to star on the hit show Dance Moms when she was younger, alongside Abby Lee Miller
‘I woke up and was like, damn, it looks like I got a lot of crusties in my eyes,’ Hyland began in the video, which has reached more than 3.5 million views since it was posted.
‘No, I just can’t open one of them’ she continued, as she showed off her completely swollen eye, and the pimple right next to her eyebrow.
She explained that she had a ‘massive,’ hard pimple for about two days near her eyebrow, and later woke up with a swollen eye.
‘I swear, the inflammation around it has spread into my eye,’ Hyland claimed.
‘So, if you have any medical experience, am I ok to just put on some ice and call it a day?’ she asked her viewers. ‘Do you think it will go down? Should I be concerned, because, like, I ain’t looking too hot.’
In response, her comments became flooded with many TikTok users warning her about the ‘triangle of death.’
‘It’s very close to the triangle of death… very well could be staph I would go to a doctor get it checked out,’ one person wrote.
Another agreed, typing, ‘Noooo it’s close to the triangle of death! Run to urgent care!!!!’

In the comments section, many users warned her of the dangerous potential of the ‘triangle of death’
The ‘triangle of death’ extends from the bridge of your nose to the corners of your mouth
According to New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Kiran Mian, of Hudson Dermatology and Laser Surgery, picking at any pimple that’s cropped up in the ‘triangle of death’ could potentially be bad news.
‘Picking at a pimple can introduce bacteria leading to an infection anywhere on the face, but is especially dangerous in this area because of the proximity to the brain,’ Dr. Mian told DailyMail.com.
‘There is a close connection of the ophthalmic veins, facial veins, and nasal blood supply all leading to the cavernous sinus.
‘The cavernous sinus is a conduit of vessels and is a connection between the blood supply of the face to the cranium.’
Dr. Mian furthered that an infection in this ‘triangle of death’ can spread ‘very easily’ to the brain, and/or spread to the eyes as well.
If you have a pimple in the area and have similar symptoms to Hyland, you should consult a doctor right away, the dermatologist warned.
‘Excessive swelling, purulent drainage, fever, eye pain or difficulty moving the eyes should be communicated to a doctor right away,’ Dr. Mian told DailyMail.com.
‘Antibiotics can help clear this infection before it spreads to more dangerous locations.’
Hyland followed up in another video to explain the ‘triangle of death’ and revealed that she was being treated with antibiotics
New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Kiran Mian, of Hudson Dermatology and Laser Surgery, explained to DailyMail.com why having a pimple in the ‘triangle of death’ was so dangerous
Hyland has since announced that her eye was feeling much better and that the swelling had gone down
She also advised to keep your hands off of a pimple in that area.
‘If one has a pimple in this area, I highly suggest avoiding manual manipulation,’ she said.
‘You can apply a pimple patch with clean hands, acne medication, or see a dermatologist for treatment in the office.’
Thankfully, Hyland did get herself to a doctor and started on a round of antibiotics, which she explained in a follow-up video.
‘Moral of the story, just don’t pop anything or be picking in these areas,’ the Dance Moms star warned viewers.
In the clip, Hyland also shared more information about the ‘triangle of death’ and included a picture of what the area looked like.
She explained that she had a virtual appointment with a doctor who prescribed her antibiotics, but was also planning to go to the hospital to get it checked out.
Hyland admitted that the comments were ‘scaring the absolute s***’ out of her.
‘I’m scared for my life now, because of this damn pimple,’ she said.
In a final update video, she confirmed that her eye was finally all better and she was on the road to recovery.
