Dangerous 4WD stunt filmed on Rainbow Beach slammed by Sunshine Coast locals

Shocking footage of a dangerous 4WD stunt at a popular beach has sparked outrage from locals.

Derrin Cook filmed the Silver Toyota Landcruiser speeding along Rainbow Beach, Queensland, with five people hanging on the outside of the vehicle while another 4WD drove alongside it.

In the footage, three people can be seen standing on either side of the car while holding on. Two people were sitting on the roof, with one holding a bottle.

Mr Cook, who confronted the group has since shared the video online.

‘I was hanging out at the beach with my son, when I saw this happening, they were doing it back and forth a few times,’ the long-time told the Sunshine Coast Daily.

‘I went up to them and said ‘look, don’t do this s**t.

‘They just laughed at me and kept going, so that was it.’

Mr Cook suspected those involved were tourists filming the stunt for social media.

‘I said to the driver ‘mate, I know the chicks are hot and they look good on Instagram and all that…. but it’s not worth doing it for Instagram, it’s all good until someone gets squashed.’

Queensland Police Service confirmed it’s aware of the incident and has launched an investigation.

No charges have been laid at this stage.

Rainbow Beach sits between K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) and Cooloola National Park and is popular 4WD enthusiasts.

As a long-term resident of the Cooloola Coast, Mr Cook said there had been an increase in dangerous behaviour recently.

The long-time local said after living there for over 30 years, he didn’t want it to be ruined by people doing the wrong thing.

‘We’ve all been young and done some stupid stuff, but don’t do it in a place where there’s a lot of other people that can get hurt,’ he said.

He’s also concerns stunt like the one he filmed will cause off-road beach access to no longer be permitted.

The latest incident comes after the death of a French student who was killed after the 4WD he was in rolled near the Teewah Beach campground last November.
