Daniel Craig groans ‘oh please!’ when he’s asked about a gay James Bond while director shuts down questions as Good Morning Britain debates future of iconic film series

Daniel Craig groaned ‘oh please!’ when he was asked about a future gay James Bond while promoting his latest movie Queer.

Good Morning Britain debated the future of iconic spy film series.

On Tuesday, the star’s historical romance film Queer, which he co-leads with Drew Starkey, premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, who also directed Challengers and Call Me By Your Name, Queer tells the story of drug-addict William Lee (Daniel) who pursues a much-younger drug addict, Eugene Allerton (Drew).

Following Daniel’s admission that he and Drew worked hard to make their love scenes realistic, Daniel was asked if there was any chance his infamous spy character could be gay, too.

Reacting to this on Wednesday, GMB entertainment reporter Richard Arnold asked: ‘As long as you can get the mission done, does it matter?’

Mainstay Susanna Reid insisted: ‘No!’ And Richard, 54, replied: ‘My point!’ To which Susanna said: ‘So, there could be…’

And Richard replied: ‘A gay James Bond!’

At Venice, Daniel did not answer the question, but, after the room laughed, Luca replied: ‘Guys. Let’s be adult in the room for a second.

‘There is no way around the fact that nobody would ever know James Bond’s desires, period.’

Luca finished: ‘Having said that, the important thing is he does his missions properly.’

To this, Daniel laughed and the audience clapped.

Queer is set in 1940s Mexico and is based on the 1985 novel of the same name by American writer and visual artist William S. Burroughs.

The film also stars Jason Schwartzman and Lesley Manville.

Daniel played James Bond from 2006 to 2021, the second-longest stint of all seven bond actors, and starred in five films.

Speaking of his love scenes, Daniel said on Tuesday: ‘We just wanted to make it as touching and as real and as natural as we could.’

Craig plays an American, living in Mexico City who becomes sexually obsessed with a former sailor.

Reacting to this, GMB entertainment reporter Richard Arnold, 54, asked: 'As long as you can get the mission done, does it matter?'

He continued: ‘Drew (Starkey) is a wonderful fantastic beautiful actor to work with and we had a laugh, we tried to make it fun.

‘There was some choreography in the movie which was a very important part of the movie. Drew and I started months before filming rehearsing the dancing. Dancing with someone is a great icebreaker.

‘You know as well as I do there is nothing intimate about filming a sex scene on a movie set, but we just wanted to make it as touching and as real and as natural as we could.’

A release date for Queer has yet to be announced.

Elsewhere on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain, Ed Balls was pummelled by Chris Eubank as part of a chaotic boxing challenge.
