Darts star James Wade has given a bizarre explanation after fans had claimed he had loudly farted while playing a match at the Players Championship.

Footage of the 41-year-old went viral on social media following his match against Callan Rydz in the quarter-finals.

Wade had earned a 6-5 victory over Rydz to take his place in the semi-finals of the tournament.

He had walked over to a table following the win, with the footage showing the darts star slightly bending his knees.

Fans claimed they could then hear the sound of a fart on the video feed, with Wade forced to take to social media to deny the claim.

Wade, known as ‘The Machine’, offered a bizarre explanation for the noise.

‘I feel I must address a situation following my run to the semi-finals of PC22 today,’ Wade wrote.

‘Footage has emerged of me doing what appears to be a “shart” at the end of one of my matches.

‘It was actually the velcro on my new trainers. I now consider this matter put to bed as don’t wish to talk about it again.’

Fans on social media were quick to poke fun at the incident, with one claiming he should now be referred to as ‘The Wind Machine’ at upcoming events.

It is not the first time a darts star has been accused of farting during a match.

In 2018, Gary Anderson was forced to deny claims from an opponent that he had farted during a Grand Slam of Darts match, after claims there had been a ‘waft of rotten eggs’ coming from his table.

‘It’ll take me two nights to lose this smell from my nose,’ his opponent Wesley Harms had claimed, leading to Anderson hitting back.

‘If the boy thinks I’ve farted he’s 1,010 per cent wrong. I swear on my children’s lives that it was not my fault,’ he said.

‘I had a bad stomach once on stage before and admitted it. So I’m not going to lie about farting on stage. Every time I walked past there was a waft of rotten eggs so that’s why I was thinking it was him.

‘It was bad. It was a stink, then he started to play better and I thought he must have needed to get some wind out. If somebody has done that they need to see a doctor. Seemingly he says it was me but I would admit it.’

Remarkably, Wade’s next opponent at the Players Championship happened to be Anderson, who ultimately ended his run by winning 7-4 in the semi-finals.

Anderson would go on to win the event by beating Connor Scutt 8-4 in the final.
