Dave Hughes left red-faced after very common Woolworths act: ‘Thought this was always a thing?’

Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes has been left red-faced after he performed a very common Woolworths act, not realising it was only meant for children.

The veteran presenter, 53, shared a hilarious clip to Instagram on Monday, in which he expressed his surprise at the store’s ‘free fruit’ initiative.

Hughes stood in front of a display which said, ‘Free fruit for kids: Let your kids enjoy a fresh piece of fruit while you shop’.

‘Free fruit for kids in-store for kids! Is this new?’ a shocked Hughes asked.

‘I’ve been enjoying complimentary fruit while I decide what to purchase at this supermarket for years,’ he added, while swallowing a grape.

‘This has always been a thing, yeah?’

The Australian supermarket chain has provided free fruit in baskets across their stores for several years, but it is only meant to be eaten by minors.

However, the initiative has often been taken advantage of and in 2022 caused a social media uproar when adult TikTok users admitted they went into the store to grab a free piece, and then left without purchasing anything.

Hughes looked to be in good spirits as he joked to his followers, three months after the shock axing of his 2Day FM Hughesy, Ed & Erin breakfast show.

The radio show managed a mere 3.6 market share in the last ratings survey.

In August, 2Day FM announced the show was axed, informing listeners they had opted to pull the plug and replace it with loveable night shift larrikins Jimmy Smith and Nath Roye, who currently host The Jimmy and Nath Show.

‘We’ve loved our time together on 2DayFM Breakfast, however, due to some of our families living in different cities we are unable to commit to 2025, so with a heavy heart we are moving aside so 2DayFM can find the team to take them forward,’ Hughesy said.

‘So grateful to Sydney for their support, and to double the number of listeners in three years is something we are immensely proud of. We will miss every one of them.’

The announcement follows rumours Dave is getting set to reunite with Kate Langbroek to reboot their popular Hughesy and Kate show.

The pair last hosted Hit FM’s popular show in 2019, before Kate, 58, took a step back from the program to move to Italy, with the Herald Sun reporting Melbourne is abuzz with rumours they are getting ready to bring back the program.
