A kangaroo from the Bronx Zoo is about to be in the limelight, appearing in an Animal Planet television show about zoologist who use cryotherapy to treat animals.
Dave, the kangaroo, suffers from arthritis but will get his shot at fame when he appears on the second season of Animal Planet’s ‘The Zoo.’
Joined by two other animals, Dave will be featured on the show’s season premiere.
The marsupials life wasn’t all glitz and glamour, however, having been rescued by an inadequate New Jersey pet owner in 2004.

The marsupial was saved from an inadequate New Jersey pet owner in 2004 and had a brief stint at an animal shelter before winding up at the Bronx Zoo
‘He was a very young kangaroo — he was still in a pouch — they didn’t have the expertise to care for him,’ Jim Breheny, director of the Bronx Zoo, explained to the New York Daily News.
‘He’s kind of an older gentleman now. He’s got some age-related problems; he has arthritis and stiffness in his joints,’ said Jim Breheny, director of Bronx Zoo
Dave was taken to a local animal shelter but they too were ill equipped with handling an exotic animal.
Luckily the Boogie Down Bronx facilities were well adapted and took the kangaroo under their care, where he has been ever since.

Cryotherapy has been trailblazing in helping athletes, as cooling pain treatment is used to limit the blood flow and stabilize/decrease swelling in the body.
Breheny stated: ‘People don’t realize how complex a task it is to really care for individual animals and manage species at same time.’
The Bronx zoo touts over 200 experts trained to care and maintain 700 resident species at their facilities.

‘A lot of people are not aware of how much zoos have evolved over the last forty to fifty, sixty — one hundred years,’ Breheny said.
‘Modern zoos in the 21st Century not only take care of animals and exhibit them to the public — we work to save species.’
The show will not only visit Dave and his other friends at the Bronx Zoo, but it will also check in with some of the season 1 favorites.
‘The Zoo’ season 2 premiers on March 10 at 9pm ET on Animal Planet.
