Today Extra host David Campbell has lost it live on morning television over comments made about Macklemore’s song Same Love being played at the NRL grand final.
Mr Campbell, alongside co-host Sonia Kruger, asked a panel of commentators what their thoughts were on Malcolm Turnbull’s decision to support the marriage equality anthem being performed on Sunday.
Nine Coach’s Sam Downing said he thought Turnbull’s decision to accepted the song was just another chance for politicians to take ‘pot shots’ at each other over the same-sex marriage debate.

Earlier on the Today show the Australian Prime Minister said that ‘It’s a question of respecting the artist. It is one of his [Macklemore’s] top songs and people expect him to play it. The NRL supports same-sex marriage… what’s the problem?’
Commentator Prue MacSween went on to say that the government ‘had made a mistake’ by openly supporting the song and combining politics with footy.
‘The AFL and NRL should all keep out of it. I don’t believe we should be allowing people to make political statements in sporting events. You’re disenfranchising a hell of a lot of people who don’t believe in it,’ she said.
Mr Campbell interrupted Ms MacSween to say that all sports were politicised anyway. ‘Look at the NFL at the moment,’ he countered.

The outburst signalled the end of the segment talking about a topic very close to Mr Campbell’s heart
In an attempt to think of a singer who would not create controversy if they took the stage, Ms MacSween asked the Today cast if Jimmy Barnes would be a better choice.
Mr Campbell replied by yelling, ‘He sang a song about Vietnam’, which refers to the tune Khe Sanh Barnes sang alongside Cold Chisel about the Vietnam War.
‘But we’re not voting about bloody Vietnam,’ Ms MacSween said.
