David De Gea ‘installs fear in the striker’ because of his goalkeeping ability, according to Frank Lampard, after the Manchester United stopper made a series of exceptional saves against Sevilla.

United were kept level by De Gea in the Champions League clash with two fantastic saves just before half time, the second, from point blank range against Luis Muriel, the best of them.

Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard thinks strikers now think twice before even having attempts on goal, such is De Gea’s reputation.

Speaking on BT Sport, Lampard said: ‘If the forward heads it down, De Gea probably kicks it away or something.

‘He is the sort of goalkeeper who almost installs fear in the striker. He’s so good that you think, can I beat this fella.’

Lampard was not the only pundit to sing De Gea’s praises, with former United players Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes also admiring the Spaniard after he clawed Muriel’s header out from under his crossbar.

Ferdinand said: ‘It was unreal. He has been doing this for a couple of years now. I celebrated this like it was a goal.

‘Really the forward should not give him the opportunity to make the save, but it’s not like it’s right at him, he waits and reacts. Countless times, he has done that.’

Scholes added: ‘He’s the best around, no doubt about that. The forward will be disappointed, but it’s not as if it has just hit him, he moves his hand towards the ball.’
