David de Gea is NOT on Manchester United’s end of season retained list

David de Gea is NOT on Man United’s end of season retained list, with talks still ‘open’ with the out-of-contract goalkeeper over a new deal to stay

  • Manchester United’s retained list has been sent to the Premier League
  • David De Gea’s name was not included, with the club saying talks are ongoing
  • De Gea’s current deal with Manchester United expires at the end of the month

David de Gea was left off Manchester United’s official retained list on Friday, with talks over a new contract still ongoing.

The Red Devils goalkeeper was the notable absentee from United’s list, which has now been sent to the Premier League ahead of next season.

De Gea endured a turbulent campaign at Old Trafford despite winning the Premier League Golden Glove last season, heavily criticised at times by pundits and fans for a host of errors between the sticks.

The Old Trafford club made it clear in a statement that his exclusion does not spell the end of his United career, insisting that talks are ‘open’ over a new deal.

‘In terms of the goalkeeping department, discussions remain open with David de Gea over a potential new contract, while Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had extensions triggered on their deals,’ United wrote in their announcement.

De Gea has agreed a new contract with the Red Devils but it is still to be signed off by the club’s hierarchy.

The proposed new deal would reduce his current £375,000-a-week salary, and it remains to be seen if United will still look to bring in a new No 1 if he does stay.

The 32-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has been at United since 2011, but he will be a free agent on June 30 unless a new extension is confirmed.

De Dea, whose season was marred by costly individual errors, did not help his case with a mistake in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, as he failed to scamper across his goal-line to keep out Ilkay Gundogan’s winning goal.

City went on to win the Treble after an impressive Champions League final triumph against Inter Milan, becoming only the second ever Premier League side since United in 1999 to achieve the feat.

The Red Devils remain in talks with Porto over a potential summer move for Portuguese shot-stopper Diogo Costa, although the FA Cup finallists are prioritising new arrivals up front ahead of next season.

Erik ten Hag’s side are in the race to sign Tottenham superstar Harry Kane, with the England captain expected to part ways with the north London club this summer, although Real Madrid’s interest has hampered their chances of signing him.

Rasmus Hojlund has also been heavily linked with a summer move for Old Trafford, as has attacking Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.

Despite leaving De Gea off the retained list, Ten Hag urged last month that he wanted to the Spaniard to stay.

He said: ‘I think we want him to stay and he wants to stay, so I think we will find each other. I never give a comment about how negotiations are going.’

As announced last month, centre-back Phil Jones is leaving after 12 years and 229 appearances for United while defender Axel Tuanzebe is departing after playing 37 games for the club.
