David de Gea tears into Luke Shaw for dire defending during Man United’s shock Spurs collapse

Exasperation is one word you could use to sum up the feelings of most Manchester United fans after Sunday’s disastrous 6-1 defeat by Tottenham, and fresh footage shows David de Gea was right there alongside them.

A new clip has laid bare the defensive frailties that are plaguing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, with the Spaniard attempting to coach left-back Luke Shaw through one of Spurs’ numerous attacks, only to see his instructions fall on deaf ears.

Already 3-1 down, and a man down following the sending off of Anthony Martial, Sergie Aurier found acres of space on the right-hand side, with his opposite man Shaw nowhere to be seen.

Manchester United’s problems were laid bare by Son Hueng-min’s second goal on Sunday

With Maguire already dragged out of position to try and stop the cross, De Gea bellows the No 23’s name in an attempt to draw his attention to the space the centre back has left open.

However, unaware of the space behind him, and Son lurking on his shoulder, Shaw focuses on the supporting run of Harry Kane on the edge of the box, leaving the front post completely unguarded.

Seeing the chaos unfold in front of him De Gea attempts to stop it: ‘No Luke, front Luke, front!’

By the time Shaw notices his mistake, it is too late – Son sneaking in at the front post to cutely tuck the ball beyond the United No 1, who’s fury is immediate.

‘That is front post. Hey!’ he shouts in the direction of Shaw, leaving the former Southampton defender in no doubt as to who he feels is at fault for the fourth goal of the afternoon.

It is this kind of moment that has become symptomatic of Manchester United’s early season misery, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men having already lost two of their opening three fixtures, conceding 11 goals along the way.

Shaw will also have been loathed to make such telling contributions to his own side’s downfall in front of former United boss Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese was a vocal critic of the 25-year-old while in charge at Old Trafford, regularly commenting on the defender’s game management and physical attributes.

Rightly or wrongly, his Sunday performance only appeared to vindicate Mourinho’s harsh words.

Shaw was himself hard on his own performance and that of his team-mates after the full-time whistle.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: ‘Manchester United shouldn’t lose in this manner. It really hurts. It’s embarrassing and we’ve let a lot of people down. We’ve let ourselves down and the staff down.

‘When we went down to 10 men maybe we gave up, there wasn’t that character on the pitch. We were too quiet and naive. There were many mistakes and we need to do more.

‘It was a lack of concentration and then a mistake, another mistake, another mistake. We switched off.

‘I was embarrassed on the pitch. We need to take a long hard look at ourselves. We are nowhere near it at the moment. Maybe it’s lucky that we’ve got a break now.’

Following the defeat, United did dip back into the transfer market on deadline day, securing defensive reinforcements in the form of Porto full-back Alex Telles, who has joined for a fee worth up to £15.4million.

Naturally a left-back, the Brazilian will undoubtedly provide competition for Shaw on that side of the park, and could be confident of ousting the England international sooner rather than later on the back of Sunday’s display.
