David De Gea’s hopes at remaining at Manchester United beyond this summer have received a big boost according to reports.

The Spaniard has spent 12 years at Old Trafford since being signed by Sir Alex Ferguson to replace Edwin van der Sar in 2011.

However, his status at the club remains uncertain with his current contract set to expire next week and the two parties initially appearing unable to strike a new deal.

De Gea is currently one of the Premier League’s highest earners on £375,000-a-week, but the 32-year-old will need to take a significant pay cut if he is to remain at the club.

The club’s most recent offer was said to be worth £200,000-a-week but with Ten Hag reportedly prioritising bolstering his attacking options this summer, De Gea may once again find himself as the club’s No 1 heading into next season.

Despite remaining a polarising figure among the United fanbase, De Gea secured the Premier League Golden Glove for the second time last season, notching 17 clean sheets as the club finished third in Ten Hag’s first season in charge.

Dean Henderson once appeared to be the heir apparent to succeed De Gea between the sticks at Old Trafford but the 26-year-old looks increasingly likely to depart the club this summer.

The United academy graduate joined Nottingham Forest in July last year, and went on to brand United’s treatment of him as ‘criminal’ after claiming he had been promised that he would usurp the Spaniard as the side’s first-choice before ultimately finding himself confined as the club’s backup goalie.

Despite missing much of the campaign through injury, Henderson is believed to want to stay at Forest, with the club reportedly keen on bringing the England international to the City Ground on a permanent deal.

However, the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the club’s ownership has hampered the Dutchman’s plans in the transfer market, and offering De Gea a new deal would provide a solution for the goalkeeping situation, if only in the short term.
