David Harbour confesses his biggest ‘ick’ about wife Lily Allen and reveals why he knew he would marry her from their third date

David Harbour has revealed his wife Lily Allen most annoying habit and why he had already decided he wanted to marry by their third date.

The actor, 49, who plays Jim Hopper in smash hit Netflix series Stranger Things, said the singer, 39, had what he called a ‘unique’ strange ick – making him stay in a room with her when he has other things to do, but then not speaking to him.

David said: ‘She does this all the time – so she’ll be downstairs in the kitchen, maybe cooking or doing something, and I’ll be trying to live my life, do various things, and she’ll call me into the kitchen.

‘And it’ll be for some reason like “David, David, do we have any cheese?”

‘I’ll (go to the kitchen), be like “Yeah, there’s cheese here”. And then she’ll be like “Where are you going?”

‘And I’m like “Babe, I’m just going to live my life”.

‘She just looks at me disappointed that I was going to go do my day so I sit at the kitchen table, but she doesn’t want to talk or interact.

‘She just wants me to be there as a presence.’

When asked by Lily’s best friend Miquita Oliver why he thought his wife did it, Harbour told the Miss Me? podcast: ‘I know exactly why, but it is a deeply psychological thing.’

He then said ‘This is one of those moments where my wife said ‘Do not reveal too much’,’ but added: ‘She just likes the comfort of people being with her in a room.

‘I think she really values it, but she just doesn’t want to directly interact. She really values it though.’

Miquita shared how Lily once told her how several days into a holiday, she and David were eating dinner and the conversation dried up leading him to say “I’m scared, are we ok, I feel like we don’t have things to say to each other”.

Lily replied ‘No, this is exactly what I want, just you and me, you don’t even need to speak to me, just be here.’

David, admitted he and Lily can be very different as he said: ‘I’m like, ‘let’s get into it’, let’s talk about the universe and what we’re meant to be here doing’. It’s very ying and yang.’

He added she needs us ‘silent, close and quiet, so she can just concentrate on what she’s doing – very annoying’.

Despite his gripe, David revealed his love for Lily and told how he had decided she was the one he wanted to marry by their third date.

The actor- who had previous relationships with actresses Alison Sudol and Julia Stiles – said: ‘I remember like the third date is when I really like fell for her.

‘We just had a conversation and there was something about this generosity and this idea of partnership. I’d been in love before, I’ve had relationships before, and there’s something about the idea of like a trusting partnership where you truly care for another’s wellbeing.

‘I’d experienced aspects of it, but I just felt in this moment, on our third date, I was like ‘Woah, this is a person who’d have my back, and I would have her back’.

‘I don’t know, there was just something very profound about it. And I was like ‘Wow, this is really real.’

The couple began their relationship in 2019, and had tied the knot by the following year in an Elvis Presley impersonator wedding in Las Vegas.
