1838: First David Jones store opened in Sydney  

1919: David Jones took to the sky and entered the history books as the first-ever retailer in Australia to deliver aerial parcels.

1936: George Street, David Jones’ original Flagship, opened its very first Food Hall which, according to early advertising posters during this time, was the first store to sell Coca-Cola in Australia.

1948: Designer Christian Dior presented the first Dior Collection to ever be shown outside of Paris with a runway at David Jones, thanks to the hard work of then-buyer Mary Alice Shiell who personally travelled to Dior’s Paris headquarters to seal the deal.

1954: Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia, and to honour her arrival as the first British monarch to set foot on Australian shores, a state dinner was held at David Jones’ Great Restaurant.

1960s: One of Australia’s most famous faces, Former Prime Minister Paul Keating, started his career at David Jones as a salesman at its Bankstown store.

1963: The iconic Houndstooth print was announced as the official brand code for David Jones.

1969: David Jones transformed its stores into makeshift theatres for the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, where staff and customers stood staring in silence at the newly installed black and white TV screens to watch history in the making.

1980s: The jingle, ‘There’s no other store like David Jones’ was created, marking the beginning of the now iconic tune.

1990s – ’00s: The era of the supermodel began along with the David Jones ambassador program, including names such as Lauren Hutton (1998), Megan Gale (2001), Miranda Kerr (2007) and Samantha Harris (2011).

2012: David Jones officially joined the digital sphere launching its online store, where customers could shop to their heart’s content with the click of a button.

2016: JONES Magazine was launched, a quarterly publication now synonymous with innovation and shaping the ever-evolving fashion landscape.

2018: David Jones launched the Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan with a clear vision for the future: equal access to education and employment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous peoples.
