David Moyes admits uncertainty over his West Ham future could unsettle his players as his deal runs down… but claims he’d ‘work with no contract’ due to his relationship with the club

David Moyes has admitted that uncertainty around his future could cause issues within West Ham.

The Hammers manager’s contract is up at the end of the season and there have been few advancements made over a potential new deal, despite the Scot delivering European silverware for the club last season.

It is believed that a decision won’t be made on his future until the end of the season with the Hammers fighting in the Europa League and again for a European place in the Premier League.

It is Moyes’ second spell in charge of the club, and the fan base appear split on his position, despite the success in last season’s Europa Conference League.

The uncertainty isn’t something that concerns the man himself, but he admitted that his squad could become unsettled with no clear direction.

‘I’m hugely comfortable with it,’ Moyes said. ‘I’d work with no contract. The contract isn’t important for me, it’s enjoying the job and as long as I’m hopefully getting enough wins to keep the board satisfied then that is what I have to do. Over the three years we’ve done pretty well.’

On how the players could feel, however, he added: ‘That is a different story. Knowing what is happening and with people in charge is important.

‘I am happy to do it and I’ve got a great relationship with the club so I don’t see any reason to panic about it.

‘We’ve got an awful lot of new players as well. It is another story. There is more change at clubs every year happening. More players changing round because of squad sizes. We’ve got a lot of new players who are just getting bedded in really.’

West Ham are currently ninth in the Premier League, but could go as high as seventh if results go their way in the division on Sunday.

They topped their Europa League group with five wins from six games, though some supporters have grown frustrated with the style of play Moyes has employed, which has seen the club adopt a more defensive approach to games.

The Hammers take on Wolves on Sunday in Moyes’ latest game in charge of two spells that have seen him lead the club for 244 matches.

The 60-year-old has been linked with a move to UEFA when his contract is up, with the organisation keen to utilise his experience.
