Former West Ham United manager David Moyes has recalled how he was caught on camera singing a controversial fan chant after the 2023 Europa Conference League final.

The song was about Hammers striker Jarrod Bowen and his partner Dani Dyer, daughter of actor and TV presenter Danny Dyer.

Sang to the tune of ‘Freed From Desire’ by Gala, it included the X-rated lyric: ‘Bowen’s on fire and he’s s***ging Dani Dyer.’

Bowen has scored 60 goals for West Ham over the past three seasons.

His most famous of those 60 strikes was a 90th-minute winner against Fiorentina in June 2023 at Prague’s Fortuna Arena.

Bowen’s winner delivered the Hammers their first European title since 1965 and was followed by wild celebrations.

Amid those celebrations, Moyes and his players joined the West Ham fans in belting out a rowdy chorus the ‘Bowen’s on Fire’.

Moyes was asked about his involvement in this during an appearance on the ‘Football Music & Me’ podcast with Geoff Shreeves earlier this month.

Shreeves asked Moyes: ‘Do you join in when the crowd sings the Dani Dyer song?’

After laughing awkwardly, a grinning Moyes – who left West Ham at the end of the 2023-24 season – replied: ‘Do you know something? The camera caught me singing it in Prague and I had to walk away in the last few lines.

‘I had to turn my back and walk away but, by the way, I was definitely singing it.

‘After scoring that goal, I was chanting it in fact.’

Bowen and Dyer went public with their relationship in December 2021 and have since welcomed three children into the world.

Earlier this year, Dyer was asked on the ‘Straight to the Comments!’ podcast for her thoughts on the chant about her man being on fire.

She replied: ‘Not that long ago I went to an away game, and I don’t usually like going to the away games because there’s the die-hard fans that are crazy.

‘I really needed a drink, so I was like, I’d rather have died of dehydration to be honest, that was the better option.

‘I came out and they were all looking at me and they all sung the song, I was literally in the midst of the crowds. It’s fine, it’s so fine, it really doesn’t bother me.’

Bowen is currently on international duty with England at Euro 2024. He earned his eighth senior cap for the Three Lions in a 3-0 friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier this month.
