David Raya produced two moments of brilliance to stop Arsenal going behind in their Champions League opener against Atalanta on Thursday night.

The first half ended 0-0 with little in the way of chances for either side in Bergamo.

However, the game burst to life shortly after the break as Thomas Partey brought down Ederson in the area with the referee pointing to the spot.

A VAR check confirmed the spot-kick and Mateo Retegui was the man to step up and take it.

And Raya then produced one of the finest double saves you are ever likely to see to keep the scores level.

The keeper got down well to his right to keep Retegui’s well-hit effort out but the ball then bounced back out into the path of the forward.

The Atalanta man looked destined to head home the rebound but Raya somehow scrambled across his line and dived to palm his header to safety.

TNT Sports match commentator was blown away by the stop, labelling it one of the best he’s seen.

He said: ‘I have got to say that is one of the best saves I have ever seen, the second one. That is unbelievable! How he gets up so quickly. Wow! One of the best saves I have ever seen!’

However, upon watching the replay the former midfielder insisted that Retegui had to score the rebound.

He added: ‘it is a wonderful save from David Raya but Mateo Retegui has to score. Should Raya even have had the chance to save it?

‘He headed the rebound back towards where the goalkeeper was. Yes he has to generate the power himself, and it was an outstanding save, but he has half the goal to aim at – a bad miss.’
