David Seaman says Bukayo Saka’s penalty miss will be ‘pivotal’ if Gunners do not win the league

David Seaman insists Bukayo Saka’s penalty miss in their 2-2 draw with West Ham will be remembered as a ‘pivotal’ moment if his former side do not win the Premier League, but adds the Gunners’ ‘are still in the title race’

David Seaman has warned Bukayo Saka’s penalty miss against West Ham on Sunday will be seen as a ‘pivotal’ moment if Arsenal do not go on to win the league.

The Gunners won the spot kick while 2-1 up in the game and would have put the game to bed with a goal, but Saka failed to find the target from 12 yards.

West Ham went on to score another and draw the game at 2-2, meaning Arsenal have thrown away two goal leads in both of their last two Premier League outings.

Their lead over Manchester City at the top of the table is now down to just four points, while Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand and still have to face the Gunners.

Seaman felt the loss was a real blow to his former side’s title hopes, as he told his Seaman Says podcast:  ‘You know what, the West Ham result feels worse than the Liverpool one.

‘They were supposed to have learned their lessons from last week. That’s what was really annoying.’

He labelled Sake’s penalty miss a ‘deciding moment in the game, before adding: If we don’t win the league, that will be remembered as a pivotal point.

‘The first half an hour we were fantastic. But we didn’t go up a gear, we went down a gear. We took our foot off the gas and it’s disappointing.’

Despite the dent in Arsenal’s lead, the former goalkeeper was confident the title race was ‘still not over.’

‘They’re not helping themselves, that’s a fact,’ he said, ‘the main focus now has got to be hopefully getting a victory against Southampton.

‘It’s a great time to play Arsenal now, we’ve had a little blip and a little wobble. Hopefully Manchester City have a little wobble.

‘It’s frustrating, but they are still in it. They go to Manchester City and we don’t know what is going to happen. They’re not going to batter us. It’s two teams playing decent football.’

Arsenal will be buoyed by their absence from other football, while City could still play an extra five games across the Champions League and FA Cup.
