David Walliams jokes about receiving critique from kids

He’s the British comedian who has also made a name for himself as a best-selling children’s author .

And David Walliamse experienced his young audience face-to-face on Friday when he visited Erskineville Public School in inner-city Sydney.

In the country to promote his latest book Bad Dad, the Little Britain star sent students into a frenzy, driving a Mini Cooper called Queenie onto the basketball court, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Speaking to the publication, David admitted that while the visit may have been a welcome break from routine for the students, for the 46-year-old, it was more about research.

‘Kids are a tough audience, if they don’t like it they’ll tell,’ David said.

‘I like to interact and find out what kids find funny, what they find scary, so I can put them in my next book.’

David, who has penned more than 10 children’s books, added that he was chuffed with the reception his writing had been getting among the harshest of critics.

‘They don’t read these books because they’re told to – they read them because they want to, which is fantastic.,’ he said.

Appearing on The Project on Wednesday, the lauded comedian traded blows, literally, with host Tommy Little.

During the interview, David picked up on the apparent nervousness of Tommy and the exchange came to a head when the clearly shaken presenter stumbled on his words when asking: ‘are you terrified your children…’ 

‘Am I terrified of what? Come on! Get it out!’ David joked, before turning to Tommy and yelling: ‘what are you going to say? Say it!’

He preceded to lightly slap him with the back of his hand, leaving the the laughing panelist to offer: ‘this has gone weirder than I thought it would.’
