David Warner’s impressive personal honour as Australia beat West Indies in T20 opener – with tourists accused of  playing ‘dumb cricket’ by Mark Waugh

David Warner chalked up yet another individual honour on Friday, becoming the first player to represent Australia 100 times in all three formats of the sport.

Warner, 37, looked on course for a blistering century in his milestone match, plundering 70 from just 36 balls at the top of the order as the hosts smashed 213 in their T20 opener against the West Indies in Hobart.

The tourists responded well, scoring runs with ease in the first few overs, only to fall short by 11 runs after losing a number of wickets late in the contest.

When key figure Nicholas Pooran was caught on the boundary by Sean Abbott off the bowling of Adam Zampa in the 15th over, Aussie cricket great Mark Waugh didn’t mince his words in the commentary box.

‘That’s just very, very dumb cricket, you can’t put it any other way,’ Waugh told Fox Cricket viewers.

‘That’s a big boundary out there….the biggest boundary on the ground.

‘Sean Abbott who’s got great hands, he’s a tall boy, it’s going to be [very] tough to clear him.

‘I [also] reckon it’s the third catch [they have offered] on that piece of grass, maybe the fourth. 

‘Zampa…it has been amazing bowling from him, but not so good batting from the West Indians.’

Warner also confirmed his plans for 2024 as he collected man of the match honours.

‘I feel refreshed, a lot of energy….I’m pumped,’ he said. ‘I want to play at the T20 World Cup [in the US and Caribbean] and finish up there. 

‘I’m excited, it’s a good journey we as team have got going on.’

The second match of the T20 series is on Sunday night at the Adelaide Oval from 7pm.
