Dawn Sturgess has ‘special precautions’ put in place at funeral to ensure mourner’s safety

Special precautions have been put in place on the advice of Public Health England to make sure mourners are safe when they attend the funeral tomorrow of Novichok victim Dawn Sturgess.

The Rev Philip Bromiley – who will be conducting the service at the Crematorium in Salisbury, Wiltshire – revealed an ‘awful lot of planning’ had gone into it so nobody would be affected by the deadly nerve agent.

He said: ‘The funeral directors have been liaising with Public Health England and they have put various precautions in place.

‘One of those precautions is that the coffin will be in situ before everybody arrives.

‘They are making sure everything is as safe as possible.

‘I have got no concerns. I know an awful lot of planning has gone into it’.

The Rev Bromiley yesterday said he did not know if her partner Charlie Rowley would be attending.

‘I genuinely don’t know if Charlie is going. We will be praying for Charlie at some stage.

‘The family do not refer to Charlie as the partner but they just call Charlie a friend. He said ‘the family are doing really well’

‘Mum and dad are doing really well but they are obviously in a state of shock. They are being really positive wanting the best for Dawn.

‘I think there is a great sense of wanting to celebrate Dawn’s life. She was a really lovely helpful giving person.’

He said at the service they wanted to ‘celebrate Dawn’ but also ‘there may be peace for the family and the area as well.’

The funeral comes days after Novichok victim Charlie Rowley revealed how he blames himself over girlfriend’s death – after giving her the Novichok nerve agent that killed her as a gift.

In his first interview since he left hospital, the 45-year-old told how he gave Ms Sturgess what he believed to be a bottle of perfume but then watched in horror as she was taken ill just 15 minutes after spraying it on her wrists.

Mr Rowley told ITV News when he came round in hospital after being exposed to the deadly Russian nerve agent, he was so ill he didn’t know who Ms Sturgess was.

He revealed how he found the ‘perfume’, which was in a sealed bottle, and gave it to Ms Sturgess on the morning that she collapsed.
