Dayot Upamecano’s Bayern Munich move facing delays due to Leipzig contract situation

Dayot Upamecano’s Bayern Munich arrival thrown into chaos due to his RB Leipzig deal not ending until mid-July… meaning he may have to return to his old club for two weeks of pre-season – unless Bundesliga champions cough up HALF of his remaining wages

Dayot Upamecano’s arrival at Bayern Munich is reportedly facing delays, due to a bizarre contract situation with his current club RB Leipzig.

In February both Bayern and Leipzig publicly confirmed a deal had been struck to see the transfer of the French defender at the end of the season.

Now, however, reports in Germany state that because Upamecano’s £38.5million release clause was triggered, the day in which he officially departs Leipzig has been pushed back.

It was widely assumed across both parties that Upamecano would become a Leipzig player on July 1, but according to Bild a further delay of up to two-weeks is now on the cards.

The report states that the 22-year-old’s contract end date is not until July 15th because his release clause was triggered.

Bild report that Bayern do have one option of getting their man on board earlier, but this entails a commitment to halve Upamecano’s current monthly salary (approximately €200,000).

The Bavarians are said to be unwilling to take this action and this stage.

Leipzig commerical director Florian Scholz has since confirmed the information with Bild, noting that the club still expect the young Frenchman to report for pre-season training despite his impending exit.

Scholz said: ‘It would certainly make more sense for both clubs if Dayot Upamecano started preparing for his new club after the summer break.

‘However, it is correct that this is not the case with the current contractual arrangement. That’s why we expect him to start training at RB Leipzig.’

Bayern fought off fierce competition to tie up the signing of Upamecano, despite interest from a host of Premier League clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea.

The Bavarians made a pledge to the youngster of guarantee game time, following the exit of club icon David Alaba who recently joined Real Madrid in La Liga.

‘We’re happy that we’ve been able to sign Dayot Upamecano for FC Bayern Munich,’ said club board member Hasan Salihamidzic after the clubs confirmed the agreement in February.

‘We’re convinced that Dayot will be a very important member of our team in the coming years,’ he added.
