Dean Wells says Abbie Chatfield is ‘way out of line’ for criticising Tones and I

Former Married At First Sight star Dean Wells has criticised Abbie Chatfield for comments she made about musician Tones and I. 

Earlier this week, Abbie said that Tones and I was ‘incorrect’ to state that ‘more people have died from suicide than Covid over the last two years’.

In a series of posts on Instagram, Dean called Abbie a ‘dildo saleswoman’ and slammed her for ‘having a go’ at the singer.

‘Sorry Abbie, you are way out of line, way out of touch,’ he said.

‘If you don’t understand that a lot of people are struggling mental health you’re absolutely insane,’ he continued.

‘Your job is protected. You make thousands and thousands of dollars off Instagram posts and selling dildos.’

‘Tones and I is a musician. She knows what it’s like to be a struggling musician,’ Dean continued.

‘She started on the streets of Byron busking and she’s trying to give away $5,000 and trying to show some sympathy for the fact that yes, a lot of people are struggling with lockdown and a lot of people are committing suicide.’

Dean also shared some suicide and mental health statistics, and has been using his Instagram page to promote small businesses that have been affected by lockdowns.

Abbie had criticised Tones and I over her ‘incorrect’ claims about lockdown suicide rates earlier this week.

The 26-year-old shared a video to Instagram addressing the Dance Monkey star’s post in which she claimed ‘[a lot] more people have died from suicide than Covid over the last two years.’

‘It’s just incorrect, the reason we haven’t had as many Covid deaths is because of lockdowns. Disappointing,’ said Abbie.

‘I just wish people would stop saying suicide rates are higher than Covid deaths because it simply isn’t true,’ she added. 

‘You’re telling me more than 4.29 million… have died of suicide in the last 18 months?’

‘It’s just incorrect, isn’t it,’ she concluded.

As of Tuesday, Covid had claimed 4.3million lives worldwide, with 940 of those occurring in Australia.

Suicides in 2019, before the pandemic began, claimed 3318 Australian lives.

And while deaths by suicide in subsequent years have not been conclusively analysed, in June the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) said that ‘early indications suggest the suicide rate in Australia has not risen’ since the pandemic began.

Worldwide, deaths by suicide are dwarfed by the lives claimed by Covid, with around 817,000 suicides estimated in 2016.

Tones and I divided had fans with her latest Instagram post about Sydney’s Covid-19 lockdown on Monday.

The 27-year-old criticised the NSW government for putting people ‘in a position of huge pain and suffering’ as the state continues to battle the highly contagious Delta variant.

She also claimed Australia ‘is f**ked right now’ and said ‘there has not been enough conversation around mental health and suicide’.

‘The government is putting the majority of the country into a position of huge pain and suffering,’ Tones wrote.

‘Everyone is losing everything, small businesses have gone under, people are locked away from friends and family, waking on the beach is becoming voodoo. And for what? When? No seriously! What’s the plan?

‘You have created a situation where people are staying in doors but it’s gone on for so long that we have forgotten what ‘life’ we are even fighting for.’

Tones also said it was ‘so hard to watch so many people suffering and it’s getting to a point where nobody can see a way out’.

She then offered assistance to small business owners affected by the lockdown.

‘Im going to try and help out 10 small businesses. With promotion / $5,000 cash and just some f**king hope!’ she said.

While some fans praised Tones, others criticised her for sharing an ‘uneducated post’ that failed to acknowledge why lockdowns are important.

‘Well done… My husband and I have a small business and it has been extremely difficult thank you for the support,’ one supporter commented.

‘Thank you for speaking up for small business,’ another wrote, while a third agreed: ‘You’re a f**king legend, well said and we need more of this.’

Another critic wrote: ‘This post is inflammatory, uneducated and could do serious damage. [It will] push people towards fringe movements that will only continue to hold us in lockdown. Why don’t you ask your [followers] to get vaccinated? Or make sure they stay at home?’
