Deborah Knight signs off on her last 2GB afternoon show after being axed – as fans blame ‘boys club’ at the station

Deborah Knight signed off on her 2GB afternoon radio show for the last time on Friday.

The popular 50-year-old broadcaster hosted the program for the last four years, and was reportedly sacked due to weak ratings.

But listeners will still be able to hear Deborah on the Sydney station since she will now move on to a new role as the national host of 2GBs Money News reports The Sunday Telegraph.

And her fans, meanwhile, have taken to social media to farewell Deb, with many listeners blaming her axing on what is perceived as a ‘boy’s club’ at the station since almost all of the top-tier on-air talent are men.

‘So sorry you are losing your afternoon show,’ wrote one listener on Instagram.

They continued: ‘It just goes to reveal what a boys club 2GB is.’

Another messaged: ‘I am staggered that this totally male dominated radio station from Friday does not have a female broadcaster on.

‘Loved your show Debra. Come on it’s 2023 for God’s sake. Females are now around 53 per cent of the population. When are these ageing dinosaur men going to get it.’

Added another fan: ‘Deb you were the best, always enjoyed listening to you. Sad to see you go.’

The roster of on-air Monday-to-Friday talent on 2GB includes shows hosted by Ben Fordham, Ray Hadley, Chris O’Keefe, Mark Levy, Scott Haywood, John Stanley, and Luke Grant.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, Deborah took a shot at critics who accused her show of poor ratings.

‘Thanks so much to all the Afternoons listeners,’ she said.

‘A good lift in the ratings today to take my show back to Sydney’s number 1 talk station.’

Last week The Sunday Telegraph reported the news that the broadcaster was ‘shattered’ by the news that 2GB management had decided to axe her from afternoons.

Her salary was rumoured to be $600,000 when she began with the afternoon radio show in 2020 after being sacked from the Today breakfast show.

But despite debuting at a stellar 11.4 per cent share results in the ratings, she has since dropped to a record-low 6 per cent market share in the most recent survey.

While it’s unclear if the TV newsreader will be reabsorbed back into Nine television, contenders have reportedly already lined up for her position at 2GB.

Joe Hildebrand, who recently filled in for Deb, is considered a ‘favourite’, though fellow 2GB presenter Mark Levy may also be a contender for the role.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Nine Network for comment.

Deb took over the coveted afternoon time slot on 2GB and 4BC in 2020 after Steve Price was ousted from his radio gig after almost a decade on air.
