Deep freeze in the Northeast set to end Sunday

The end is in sight – finally. The weather may not reach sunny Florida temperatures, but the arctic blast that has been gripping the Northeast since last month is expected to come to an end.

According to the National Weather Service, Sunday is expected to be the last day of the deep freeze with temperatures slowly rising in the upcoming week and winds easing somewhat.

Forecasters have predicted that Monday in New York City will be 31 degrees, which would solidify 14 days below freezing, the third longest stretch on record. Tuesday in the City is expected to be 39 degrees and Wednesday 38 degrees, much higher than Sunday’s temperatures.

‘Record breaking cold temperatures and bitterly cold wind chills will continue through the weekend over the eastern third of the nation. Exposure to cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia and frost bite in little time. Be safe,’ a Facebook post read.

Winter Storm Grayson which engulfed the East Coast has brought a lot more than freezing temperatures.

Hospitals in Rhode Island have treated dozens of patients for storm-related injuries following a powerful blizzard that dropped more than 14 inches of snow in some parts.

In Providence and Newport, at least 40 people were treated for various weather-related conditions, such as heart attacks, snowblower or shoveling injuries, frostbite and more, according to The Providence Journal.

‘This is chilly, chilly stuff,’ Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, said on Thursday.

The storm, known as the ‘bomb cyclone’, began three days ago in the Gulf of Mexico and first struck the Florida Panhandle. By Thursday it was wreaking havoc as blizzard warnings and states of emergency went into effect along the Eastern Seaboard. Wind gusts hit more than 70 mph in places and some areas saw as much as 18 inches of snow.

The storm caused school and business closings, airline and rail service cancellations or reductions and thousands of utilities outages, many of them restored quickly. Some ferry services even had to be shut down along the Canadian coast.

In the South, the winter weather forced portable toilets to be put in place outside Mississippi’s Capitol after pipes burst. Residents of southeast Georgia were treated to a rare half foot of snow.

In New England, the powerful winds brought coastal flooding that reached historic levels in some communities with icy water overflowing piers, streets and restaurants and stranding some people who had to be rescued.

The dangerous weather conditions have also been blamed for at least seven deaths.

In North and South Carolina, four people were killed after their cars ran off the snow-covered roads. Another person died near Philadelphia when a car could not stop at the bottom of a hill covered in snow. The vehicle slammed into a commuter train killing the passenger, authorities said.

A girl in Virginia was also killed by a pickup truck while sledding and a 75-year-old man in Hampton was hit by a snow plow while clearing business parking lots.
