Delta Goodrem reveals the bizarre reason female fans started throwing bras and underwear at her on stage

Delta Goodrem has revealed the reason why female fans started throwing bras and underwear at her on stage during a recent concert.

The Australian singer, 39, took to the stage at A Day on the Green in Bowral last weekend, but was left surprised when fans started throwing underwear at her.

During the concert, she addressed the crowds as she jokingly described it as her ‘lucky day’ when she had her first ever bra thrown on stage by an eager fan.

Addressing the amusing moment during an appearance on Tuesday’s Sunrise, Delta insisted the underwear throwing came about because it was Tom Jones’ concert.

The Welsh singer, 83, became a pop star heartthrob with his hits including What’s New Pussycat? in the 1960s, before hit popular dance track Sexbomb in 1999.

His female fans would famously throw their underwear at him on stage during his 1960s heyday, and he still gets bras thrown during his performances to this day.

Delta jokingly described it as the ‘Tom Jones effect’ as she told how performing alongside the music legend saw female fans start throwing their underwear at her too.

She told Sunrise hosts Matt Shirvington and Natalie Barr: ‘Yeah, well it’s a Tom Jones concert. So it was part of us together. The two of us were doing a day on the green together.

‘Frankly, I wanted to start the spirit, I heard that’s what everyone was doing. In my wildest dreams I never thought in my career I’d start having knickers and bras, but we had so much fun! It was awesome.’

Joking that she had now inherited the practice, she quipped: ‘The torch has been passed on! It’s gone to me!’

She added of performing alongside Tom: ‘We were singing, we were playing, and that’s what live shows should be!’

After the show, Delta shared a video to Instagram showing one very eager fan throwing a bra on stage at her as she joked that she hoped it wasn’t the last.

Laughing off the antics, she said: ‘I’ve got a bra, I’ve got some knickers, fantastic! This is my lucky day never at one of my concerts have I had a bra thrown at me.’

Delta was seen swinging the underwear around in the air and using it as a prop while she performed The Pointer Sisters’ hit I’m So Excited.

In a caption, she joked: ‘You think you’ve done so much a couple of decades into performing live and then you get your first bra thrown on stage and it’s a new standard unlocked.’

Elsewhere on Sunrise, Delta also reflected on parting ways with her manager of 11 years and spoke about how she is feeling ‘inspired’ following the big change.

Last year, Delta confirmed that she was parting with Sony music to start her own record label called ATLED Records and she has since also parted ways with her manager Tina Kennedy.

Speaking about the change, Delta said: ‘There’s always seasons in your life and different chapters.

‘I’m so grateful that I have wonderful chapters, we really celebrate the time together, the two of us and continue on as friends.

‘I just at this moment, it’s just going through a new season and new era. I’m feeling really inspired and creative and enjoying the moment as always. Getting to do great performances with great people. That’s it.’

Tina, of Azoff Music Management, has been the star’s global manager across all platforms for 11 years.

In a joint statement, they confirmed earlier this month: ‘It is with shared pride, admiration and dedication that we have worked alongside each other, achieving so many professional goals, milestones and success.

‘After an incredible 11 years we close this management chapter and move forward with love respect and friendship.’

Delta added to The Sunday Telegraph: ‘There is a freedom to the world of music in this day and age that I really enjoy – It’s an exciting time to be able to collaborate, and think outside the box, I’m really enjoying all of the variety of this season of my life.’
