During the discussion, which was moderated by HIFF Advisory Board member and CBS Sunday Morning contributor Alina Cho, The Substance actress talked about her ex-husband, Bruce Willis, 69, and his diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

‘You know, I’ve said this before. The disease is what the disease is. And I think you have to be in real deep acceptance of what that is,’ Moore told the festival audience. ‘But for where he’s at, he is stable.’

‘What I always encourage is to just meet them where they’re at. When you’re holding on to what was, I think it’s a losing game,’ she added.

‘But when you show up to meet them where they’re at, there is great beauty and sweetness.’

Demi was married to the Die Hard star from 1987 to 2006. The former couple and good friends share daughters Rumer, 36, Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 30.

During the panel, a highlight reel of her career, featuring clips from Ghost (1990), AN Indecent Proposal (1993) and G.I. Jane (1997) was shown.

The A Few Good Men star also spoke about how she felt watching that reel of her films backstage.

‘I felt like I was watching a lot of life,’ she said. ‘Actually feels like lifetimes, because the gift is that we get to keep changing and growing.

‘What I was thinking is, “Thank God I kept getting opportunities to get better.”‘

Demi is currently starring in The Substance as aging Hollywood star Elizabeth Sparkle who injects a substance to turn back the clock after being told she is too old to be desirable or employable.

She reflected on her own battle with self-image in an interview with The Guardian last month upon the film’s release.

‘We’ve all had moments where you go back and you’re trying to fix something, and you’re just making it worse to the point where you’re incapacitated.

We’re seeing these small things nobody else is looking at, but we’re so hyper-focused on all that we’re not. All of us, if we start to think our value is only with how we look then ultimately we’re going to be crushed.’
