Dentist reveals why clearing your nose is as important as brushing teeth before bed

  • Snoring affects 30 million people in the UK with 58 per cent aged 50 to 59
  • As a person breathes the moving air causes the tissue to flutter making noise

Dentists have spent years begging us to brush our teeth before bed.

But there is another vital step in your nighttime routine which you may be skipping out on — clearing your nose.

Ensuring your sinuses are clear can help with getting a good night sleep and ending your snoring, according to Dr Sebastian Lomas, a Yorkshire-based dentist.

He said: ‘I would argue clearing your nose before bed is just as important as brushing your teeth.

‘The reason why; if you can’t breath through your nose you are going to mouth breathe and you are going to snore.’

He then pinches the tip of his nose and shakes his head from side to side so that his ears nearly touch his shoulders. While doing this, he attempts to pop his ears for at least five seconds.  ‘It makes you in a place where you are not resting and digesting and getting all your energy’, he added.

Dr Lomas demonstrated a simple technique to clear your blocked sinuses on a TikTok video, viewed nearly 250,000 times.

Snoring is caused by the rattling and vibration of tissues near the airway in the back of the throat.

As a person inhales and exhales, the moving air causes the tissue to flutter and make noise.

This becomes even worse if a person’s nose is blocked.

Around 58 per cent of snorers are between 50 and 59 years of age.

Dr Lomas’s 44-second clip was hailed as a ‘brilliant idea’ that people are going to start adding to their night time routine.

One user wrote: ‘Sooo helpful thank you.’

Another commented: ‘Love this straightforward practical demonstration.’

However, some users were less than impressed and claimed the technique had the opposite of the intended result.

One TikTok user wrote: ‘This ended up blocking my nose.’

While another said ‘nothing happened’.
