A Gold Coast dentist is urging for tougher rules be put in place to prevent girls, as young as 15 years old, from receiving botox and injections.

Dr Myles Holt, who is also a facial aesthetics expert, claims teenage girls are at risk of ‘potentially dangerous complications’ after being influenced by social media to undergo cosmetic procedures.

He believes it is celebrities like Kim Kardashian who are influencing young girls to get ‘unnecessary’ work done, including botox injections and artificial lip and face fillers.

Dr Holt is the head of the Australasian Academy of Dento-Facial Aesthetics and is insisting a blanket ban be put in place to stop those under the age of 18 from receiving injectables.

‘We don’t allow under 18s to drink, to drive or to vote, so I don’t think we should be allowing them to have injectables either,’ he told The Courier Mail.

‘We’re hearing stories of kids getting fillers as birthday and Christmas presents or as rewards for completing exams,’ he added.

Dr Holt blames unethical operators and strongly suggests harsher penalties be put in place for rogue ‘cosmetic surgeons’ and beauticians.

‘The problem is that some in the cosmetic industry don’t turn them away and are happy to ignore their age in the pursuit of a quick buck in a competitive, and increasingly corporate, market,’ he said.

He went on to add that young girls should not compare themselves to celebrities like Kim Kardashian when seeking out injectables since these stars are way above their age range.

Countless young influencers who have undergone lip filler and botox procedures have openly shared their experiences.

Australian influencer Shani Grimmond, 22, has shared many videos discussing the work she’s had done, saying she does not regret her decisions.

‘The only thing that has changed is physical appearance and that just comes down to me wanting to do it, because I’m happy with doing that with myself. I just wanted to change a few things,’ she said in one of her YouTube videos.

Although Dr Holt described Queensland’s laws in relation to cosmetic surgery as ‘lax’, a Queensland Health spokesman disagrees.

‘It is an offence to perform any cosmetic procedure on a person under the age of 18. Offenders face fines of up to 2000 penalty units ($26,900) or two years imprisonment.’
