Deontay Wilder’s camp are attempting to secure a fight against Andy Ruiz Jnr

Deontay Wilder’s camp have sent an official offer to try and secure a fight with Mexican heavyweight Andy Ruiz Jnr.

Wilder is seeking a first bout since October last year when he knocked out Robert Helenius after previously losing his WBC world heavyweight belt to Tyson Fury.

MailSport reported on Friday that Wilder is closing in on a mega-fight with fellow former champion Anthony Joshua, but could finalise a deal with Ruiz as a warm-up.

The ‘Bronze Bombers’ trainer Malik Scott revealed that negotiations were ongoing with Ruiz and explained: ‘The ball is in your [Ruiz’s] court now, let’s get it signed and sealed,’ according to Michael Benson.

Ruiz responded in a video message following a gruelling training session on Sunday where he confirmed negotiations were ongoing, stating on his Instagram: ‘We’re getting it, make sure you guys tune in, big piece coming up. 

‘Wilder, we’re coming man, we’re just negotiating right now,’ he added.

Ruiz also tagged Wilder message on Twitter that read: ‘Lets goo @bronzebomber’. 

location for the potential fight has been confirmed, however, it is likely that an American venue will be chosen given the locality to both camps. 

The Staples Centre in Los Angeles and T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas each staged part of Wilder’s trilogy series against Fury, while Madison Square Garden was previously used as a base for Ruiz’s shock victory over Joshua in 2019.

However, Joshua and Wilder are expected to square off in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in December while Skills Challenge are also planning to play host to Fury and Oleksandr Usyk’s long-awaited undisputed fight on the same card.

Should Ruiz and Wilder lock horns in the ring then it would mark a first meeting between the two former heavyweight champions.

The American is seeking to re-build his status after losing his titles to Fury and wants to secure a future championship opportunity, while Ruiz is attempting to forge a similar route back to the top of the heavyweight division.

The Mexican has won both of his follow-up fights since being beaten in a rematch by Joshua in Saudi Arabia four years ago, last coming out on top against Luis Ortiz in a unanimous decision win.

Wilder could have a quick succession of fights if all proposed deals go through with Matchroom boxing chief Eddie Hearn revealing that talks are set to take place in London next week to finalise an agreement with Joshua.

‘We’re looking to stage meetings in London next week to finalise the deal. We believe in Prince Khalid and Skills Challenge in terms of their desire to make the fight,” he told Boxing News.

‘It’s always slow but next week there are meetings in London to close the deal for Joshua-Wilder.
